And the Winners ARE…..

To heck with American Idol and Dancing with the Stars!  We have the winners of our first ever Fab Fatties Challenge!  WOO HOO!  This past week has been so much fun and so inspiring.  We have had so many people tell us that we inspire them but the truth is you all inspire us 1000 times more 🙂  When we threw this challenge out there we had no idea that so many of you would respond and participate the way that you all did.  There were a lot of miles covered ladies!  For all of you who have been asking…YES we will be doing another challenge!  We will announce it on Tuesday May 26th so keep watching!

The 2 winners were chosen by covering the mile minimum (FYI they both covered more.)  They also had to submit a short story of what the challenge did for them.  This was not an easy task we had fantastic stories and experiences to choose from and to us everyone that participated is a winner.  We use twitter id’s quite a bit so if you are not on twitter, get on and follow these FABULOUS Friends of ours!  Along with the winners we wanted to share a few things that some of the other participants sent us so please enjoy the inspiration they have shared and use it to stay motivated this week!

I am @seventy_eight on twitter and here is my story.
 
At the start of the challenge the most I had ever done on a bike was about 20 minutes and I wasn’t really sure what my potential would be for this. I feel like up until now I have always set myself challenges and never had the power to finish them properly. I decided that this time would be different. The support I got from you and everyone else was amazing – I loved taking photos of the display of the bike because it meant I had to be honest with myself.
 
When I started to get close to 50 miles I knew I had to step it up to keep it challenging. I chose 78 miles because I knew it would take an extra push (and oh my goodness it did) and the number 78 has been important to me on my journey. I am so pleased I got to 78 miles. This week has been tough (hectic at work, couple of big social events and have had my little heart broken too) and the fact I did it this week is testament to how strong I am getting now.
 
Thank you so very much for organizing this and showing me that if I dare to dream I might just be able to achieve that little bit more than I thought I would.

I ran (and sometimes walked) 22 miles this week. That is about normal for me, but your challenge came at just the right time to give me the inspiration I needed. I have a strained right hip abductor muscle. It happened at the gym, on a resistance machine that I have been doing for a while, but not as regularly as I should. It’s funny, because that machine seems easy to do compared to many of the machines. I had just run a race a few days before, and I guess I just overdid it. Anyway, my hip was sore, and I was feeling old. I started to think that I might be too old to be running. Many of my non-running friends and relatives are always telling me that I am ruining my knees or my hips by running. Just as I was thinking that maybe they were right, your challenge came along. So instead of giving up, I did all the research I could on the hip muscle strain. Most people think it is better to keep moving on a strain if you don’t overdo it. So I kept going, iced a lot, took some ibuprofen, and even tried substituting spanks under shorts for compression shorts. Now my hip is better, so thanks! I have a 10 mile race this Saturday that I didn’t have to give up on.

Biking 50 miles sounds a lot harder to me than running 22 miles. I was thinking more about biking because of you and the nice weather we’re finally having here. So I bought a bike helmet! I haven’t actually ridden the bike yet – it is hanging on hooks on the garage ceiling! But I’m going to get it down soon and start biking more. I know it is good cross training for running, and I will probably stay healthier if I mix up the exercise more. So thanks for the inspiration there too!

Ok…so I didn’t really get to participate except for two days.  Good news it encouraged me to get in 3.5 miles when I was able to.  What a motivator this was for so many people.  Although I had to stand on the sidelines, as the official cheerleader, it is tremendous to see people perform!!  Everyone did a great job!   A huge thanks to you two gals for putting this all together.  Sign me up for the next one!

I completed (Tues-Tues) 21 miles of combined walking and running this week.  I learned to listen to my body this week. I had some aches and pains so I really tried to walk when it hurt, but I never stopped.  At this point I feel great and ready to do another 5k run on May 30th!!
You two are wonderful support for each other and such a great example of what real Community means.

Wish I could tell you I did all 15 miles, or more, but I didn’t. 😦 I only did 13.66. Still WAY more then I would have done on a treadmill in one week though. I think the hardest part of all this for me was that I’ve always opted to take the easy route, and use the elliptical. Not because I have any kind of knee problems, but it’s really just easier. But doing this challenged me, and though I didn’t do all 15 miles, I’m really proud of myself. I always seem to wuss out after about twenty or so minutes, but I was forced to challenge myself and keep going, and push myself as hard as I could. Doesn’t happen too much when it comes to my cardio. So thanks a bunch for doing this! I hope you do it again because next time I won’t disappoint you!  **FYI No Way could anyone dissapoint us you ROCK! xo FabFatties

The challenge helped me in that I got to meet some great women who not only allowed me to motivate them but more so they motivated and inspired me with their energy, commitment and enthusiasm. I felt a tremendous sense of community and sisterhood from women coming together with a common goal to move into better health/fitness. I also knew that this challenge would tap into larger, plus size women and allow them to understand that they could be an athlete without being a size 2 or 4. I have always beleived that ”FITNESS COMES IN MANY SIZES” and this challenge has helped my vision to certainly become a reality. I want to give fabfatties a special thanks, because of this challenge I think that more women have begun to move and breathe. Today is the Last Day for the 50/15 Challenge

We are wrapping it all up today!  If you haven’t gotten your miles in yet you have today to finish it all up.  We are so glad that we did this little challenge.  It has gotten us up and moving that’s for sure!  If your wondering what to do now…you just need to complete your miles and send us a short email fabfatties@aol.com of how many miles you covered and what this challenge has done for you by 12:00 p.m. Wednesday 5/20.  That’s it, simple enough!  

1 kids on bikeThere will be 2 prizes given out.  1 for the 50 miles on a bike and 1 for the 15 run/walk.  So if you are chosen to win you will have to provide us with your info. so we can get your fabulous prize to you 🙂  The winners will be announced on Thursday as our Fabulous Friend of the Day.  So if you want to include your blog/website and photo in your email that would be wonderful, but it is optional.

A 50 Mile Challenge

Today on my earlier post Chocolate Cake, Lilacs and a Goat I made a statement that I will ride a total of 50 miles on my bike this week.  My Mom has taken that as a challenge.  So she is determined to do better and get her 50 in before me.  Now that there is some competition I am seriously going to do it!   If you have a bike and want to participate I thought it might be fun to have anyone who wants to, join us.  Let us know and keep us updated in the comments on this post.  It will be fun  to motivate each other and get moving. 

This will be going on during the week of 5/12 to 5/19. 

I think there will be a prize for this but I have not figured out quite what it will be, however I will make it good because I want to win it! lol If you want to participate just let us know in the comments and whoever puts the most miles on their bike is the winner, but you have to at least put 50 on your bike!   

So the race is on and I hope you will join us! 

*If you do not have a bike then walk instead at least 15 miles for the week and you can be a part of it as well 🙂  We will just add a prize for walkers along with the prize for bike riders! 

*UPDATE

We have had an awesome response to this challenge!  WOW you all rock!  This is a challenge that will be going on the week of 5/12 to 5/19 It is open to join until wed. night 5/13 so join us!  The point is to ride a bike at least 50 miles or run/walk at least 15 miles in this week.  At the end of the week tally up your miles and let us know the total. 

*Due to the different fitness levels of everyone who wants to participate we are going off at least meeting the mile requirement and we are going to have to ask that you give us a short story of what this challenge did for you at the end of the week.  We will choose the winners out of that criteria.  This keep the playing field even and fun for everyone!

If you want to join us please put your name in the comments and what you will be doing.  You can use exercise equiptment as well so NO EXCUSES!  Tell everyone you know and we are excited to get moving!

Things that make you go hmm…

Do you ever see, read or hear something and think hmm???  We do that often and sometimes we wonder if it is just us.  So that is the inspiration for this post.  This is an input post so we are looking for your comments and opinions.  Make a top 10 list of things that really just do not make sense to you and send them our way.  The Most Fabulous list will be featured with your link on Wednesday 4/29/2009. 

Here is our Top 10 List of Things that Make you go hmm… 

  1. Plus Sized Panties that have a huge heart on the back side with flashing lights…maybe they should have a beeper as well…hmm 
  2.  When someone tells you that you Can’t…um whatever!…hmm
  3. A Diet Coke with a supersized Big Mac meal…hmm 
  4. Fat chicks in belly shirts…hmm
  5. Serious people…seriously?!…hmm 
  6. Thongs that are not meant for feet…hmm
  7.  A woman wearing a t-shirt with a big pig on the front and back…really we saw it!…hmm
  8. When you run and you get boob-lash…Ouch!…hmm  
  9.  2 fat women riding bikes and you can’t even see the seats.  That was us :)…hmm
  10. My 3 year old son saying he has a big belly and he is going to have a baby.  What’s mommy going to have a dinosaur?!…hmm

I am Superwoman!

Okay so today feels really good!  I choose SUPERWOMAN for several reasons.  First it is because I have to song stuck in my head so it got me thinking.  Second it is because if you are a mom (or Dad SUPERMAN) you automatically qualify as a superwoman.  Third you almost have to have super powers to change your eating habits! 

Yesterday went really well.  We both were able to stay under our calorie limit…YEAH!  Not only that we went on a 4 mile bike ride and did not pass out.  So all in all it was a good day.  The bike ride was interesting.  Have you seen the seats that come on bikes these days?  LITTLE!  Angie mentioned a comment that someone made about a fat woman on a bike and it looked like her butt was going to swallow the seat.  LOL   Very possible if you look at the size of seats that come with your average bike.  Not to mention they can make you a bit sore in places that you would rather not be sore!  So while riding our bikes we could not help but think if that is the image people had in their head as we rode by…more than likely 🙂 

So off on day 2 and the future is looking bright.  Today we are one step ahead of yesterday and as long as we keep going we will never be as unhealthy as yesterday.  That is an awesome thought!   The support we are getting from this blog and our new friends at twitter is FABULOUS!   Thank you so much!  Don’t forget to send us your stories and pictures along with your website or blog link!  email: fabfatties@aol.com
